360blog’s 7 Days Of E3 – Day 7 – Nintendo Recap

2 June 2009 by: Alex St-Amour No Comment

Out of the big three, Nintendo probably had the most to prove, their showing at last year’s E3 was well… sub-par. So would the house of Mario return to it’s former glory at this year’s event? Short answer, yes. Long answer, hell yes! You know your gonna have a great show when the 1st thing you show could be considered a show stealer.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

For the first time in the series all that classic Super Mario Bros. gameplay can be enjoyed in frantic 4 player action. This was the first of many great games announced by Nintendo from Nintendo at E3.

Wii Fit Plus & Wii Sports: Resort

The rumored Wii Fit Plus was finally made official, being more of an expansion pack then a brand spanking new game, however the addition of more accurate stat tracking and even more crazy games is enough to justify this expansion.

Wii Sports: Resort was announced at last year’s E3 and was finally fully demoed, with its full roster of games revealed, all using the brand new Wii Motion Plus.

Four Huge R.P.G.’s (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Mario & Luigi and Golden Sun)

The Wii and DS got huge support from both Square-Enix and Nintendo’s own R.P.G. studios, Final Fantasy: The Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (that’s a mouthful) got a brand spanking new trailer that shows off some gameplay, as did the confusingly titled Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS.

Mario & Luigi: RPG 3 also got a North American launch date and a new title, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. Finally the big news for DS fans, Golden Sun DS will release for the system and finally bring a new installment to the beloved series.

DS Games For Everybody

The Nintendo DS got three new third party games that each reach out to different audiences. James Patterson: Women’s Murder Club: Games Of Passion will bring Nintendo’s handheld to housewives and mother’s everywhere, while C.O.P.: The Recruit tells the tale of a rookie cop who is taken in to help save New-York City from a terrorist attack, and is one of the best looking DS games we’ve seen. The final game is aimed at young teen girls, titled Style Savvy, it introduces players to the world of fashion design and boutique management.

Nintendo DSi

The next portion of the presentation was geared towards Nintendo’s new handheld the DSi. The video editing software Flip Book was quickly shown, it allows users to make animations using the DS touch-screen and upload them to the internet.

Speaking of user created content, Nintendo also previewed Mario VS. Donkey: Minis March Again for the DSi’s download service, DSi Ware. The game will allow users to create levels and also upload them to the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection to share to the world. The game will be available next Monday on DSi Ware.

Even more user generated content is on it’s way for the Nintendo DSi. Wario Ware: D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) will allow you to create the micro-games and also share them with the world. Now that’s alot of stuff to make!

Following the announcement of Facebook on the Xbox 360, it was revealed the DSi will also get the famous social network as well as the ability to take pictures that were shot with the DSi camera and edited with the photo channel and upload them to Facebook.

Wii Vitality Sensor

Satoru Iwata then took to the stage and gave the world it’s first glimpse of the Wii Vitality Sensor. The unit can measure your pulse, which is useful for software that is designed to help users relax and maybe even help them fall asleep. The Wii Vitality Sensor is tagged as future tech. so don’t expect to see much of it any time soon. Interesting none the less.

Show Stealers: Super Mario Galaxy 2

Holy crap! That’s right the highest rated game of the current generation is getting a sequel. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will launch in 2010.

Hardcore Third Parties (The Conduit, Resident Evil, Dead Space)

Hardcore third party games are finally coming to the Wii in droves. The first person shooter from Sega and High Voltage Software will launch in just three weeks, while Resident Evil: The Dark Side Chronicles, the sequel to The Umbrella Chronicles is expected to launch this winter. Finally Dead Space: Extraction will terrify gamers everywhere this fall.

Metroid: Other M

YES YES YES! THE game Wii owners have been screaming for. Co-developped by Nintendo and Team Ninja this is the definitive Wii core game.

So Nintendo has redeemed themselves, but what will Sony have in store? Come back in a little while and we’ll have the answer.
